Event Series Event Series (See All)

Rosa Parks Day is a holiday commemorating the civil rights leader Rosa Parks and her legacy.

It is celebrated in California and Missouri on her birthday, February 4th, in Michigan on the first Monday after her birthday, and in Ohio and Oregon on the day she was arrested, December 1st.

Parks (1913-2005) was a civil right activist at the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Montgomery, Alabama.

On December 1st, 1955, she got arrested when refusing the give up her bus seat for a white man. Her arrest sparked the Montgomery bus boycott, and with a federal lawsuit, bus segregation ended in Montgomery.

Following her arrest, Parks continued her activism work and dedicated her life to fighting for equal rights.
