The art space was founded in 2019 by Judy Chicago’s non-profit feminist art organization Through the Flower.
Chicago (b. 1939) is one of the most famous feminist female artists in the world. She started to create art from a young age and has exhibited since her twenties. In her early thirties, she developed the first feminist art program in the US and co-founded the Womanhouse – a mansion turned into a workshop and exhibition space where women can create and display their art.
In 1977, she founded Through the Flower. A non-profit feminist art organization that works to educating about women in history through art and promoting it as a tool for emphasizing women’s achievements. The organization coordinates traveling exhibitions, shares the free K-12 Dinner Party Curriculum, supports the Through the Flower Library By and About Women at UNM Valencia, and runs the Judy Chicago Art Education Award committee.
In 1979, Chicago exhibited for the first time her most known work – The Dinner Party. The piece is a large triangle table set for 39 places. Each place commemorates a mythical or historical female figure, such as Virginia Woolf, Sojourner Truth, and Empress Theodora of Byzantium. The artwork symbolizes the struggle for equality women face in male-dominant societies. It is on view at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, 4th Floor of the Brooklyn Museum in NYC.
Even in her 8th decade, she creates art and exhibits all around the world. She is experimenting with different media in her art, from drawing and sculptures to acrylic plastic and even fireworks and pyrotechnics.
Through the Flower Art Space in New Mexico exhibits Chicago’s history and artwork as well as her husband, the photographer, Donald Woodman. The center also organizes public programs such as lectures and workshops. Read more...
