The Women’s Museum of California is a nonprofit museum and an educational center dedicated to women’s history. The goal of the museum is to collect and preserve women’s experiences, interpret them, and bring untold stories of remarkable women to light. It also hosts the San Diego County Women’s Hall of Fame.
Learn about women’s history through the displays and changing exhibits, such as ‘marching toward empowerment,’ ‘groundbreaking girls,’ and ‘100 years of handbags.’
You can explore the museum library and research the archive that includes books and special collections, such as artifacts of the Women’s Suffrage Movement of the late 19th century and early 20th century, a collection of period women’s clothing dating from the 18th century, and materials related to the UN Conference on the Status of Women.
There are also workshops, lectures, and special events like film nights, sketch comedy shows, historic clothing show, and the monthly discussion meetings. At the museum store, you can purchase artworks of local women artists and a variety of gifts, items, and artifacts.
The museum was founded by Mary B. Maschal, a women’s rights activist and a collector of women’s history items. In 1983, Maschal opened her home to the public, naming her collection ‘The Women’s History Reclamation Project.’ She started her collection because of her disappointment over the lack of knowledge about women’s history among the younger generation.
