Celoron, NY, USA
A waterfront recreation park in Celoron bears the name of its famous native, Lucille Ball, an actress, comedian, and producer, known to all as the star and producer of the sitcoms I Love Lucy. The park offers several facilities, among them are: a playground, recreation area, boat launch and docks, picnic area, and two statues of Lucille Ball.
The first statue, sculpted by David Poulin in 2009, depicts Ball in a scene from Lucy Does A TV Commercial. It earned the nickname the Scary Lucy, and some compared it to a zombie and a Walking Dead. Since it hardly resembles Lucy nor flatters her, many of her fans resent it, demanding a new statue. A viral-campaign convinced the city of Celoron to add a new statue, and the criticism and fuss about the Scary Lucy statue exhausted Poulin to a level that made him quit sculpting.
In 2016, the artist Carolyn Palmer was elected to create a new bronze statue of Ball. The elegant and chic sculpture highly resembles Lucy, capturing the eyelashes, makeup, hair, polka-dot dress, pearls, handbag, and high-heels. It soon got the nickname Lovely Lucy. The dedication ceremony with many of Lucy’s fans took place on August 6th, 2016, on her 105th birthday. Read more...
