The museum pays homage to the life and legacy of Indira Gandhi, India’s 3rd Prime Minister and the only woman to serve in this position till today.
Gandhi (1917-1984) was one of the most powerful women in India. She was involved in politics since her early 30s, as her father’s unofficially personal assistant when he was the first prime minister of India. She continued with several rules in congress and the government till 1966, when she got elected as the 3rd Prime Minister of India, serving till 1977 and then during 1980-1984. Between these two terms, she held several ministerial positions.
Gandhi lived in this house most of her public life, moved in when her father passed away in 1964 and stayed until her assassination by one of her bodyguards on October 31st, 1984.
The rooms are organized in exhibits, displaying her life through her belongings, art collection, and photographs that captured her small and large life moments with the world leaders and closed family. The visitors can see her Study room, filled with books, and Indian art decorations, her bedroom, also full of books and pictures of her close family members. Here she woke up early and exercised for 15 minutes. The formal drawing room is where she hosted visitors from all over the world. Another section of the house honors the life of her son, Rajiv Gandhi, who was the sixth prime minister of India in the years 1984 to 1989.
Among the interesting items on display are the sari she wore during the tour a day before her assassination, her stones collection, and international newspapers with articles about her achievements.
