The Elina Guimarães Documentation Center and Feminist Archive (Centro De Documentação E Arquivo Feminista Elina Guimarães) is a library and archive center dedicated to collect, preserve and present documents, books, biographies, newspapers, and other media related to the history of women’s studies, feminism, women’s organizations, and the history of the women movements in Portugal. It was founded in 2005 by the Portuguese NGO Women’s Association Alternative and Response with many volunteers. Besides providing free access to its documents, the center hosts special events, conferences, and exhibitions.
The center archives all the articles and books of Elina Guimarães and is named after her. Guimarães (1904-1991) was a famous Portugal writer, feminist, and women’s rights activist. She was born and raised in Lisbon in a politically involved family. In 1926, she graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon. Since she was a student and until she died, she wrote articles in newspapers advocating for equal rights for women in education, work, and law. She joined the Conselho Nacional das Mulheres Portuguesas (CNMP – National Council of Portuguese Women) and over the years got to fill in several positions, including the vice president. She was married and had two children. Two years after the Carnation Revolution, Guimarães and Portugal’s suffragists’ fight ended when the new Constitution established equality between the sexes at all levels. Read more...
