This memorial commemorates the contribution of Puerto Rican women to their country. It consists of a standing bronze statue of a woman in movement, climbing a ladder, and holding the world in her right hand, symbolizing how much power and energy women need to invest in improving their position in society and the importance of their contribution to the world.

The Ponce chapter of the Union of American Women, led by Edna Rodriguez, commissioned and donated the statue to the city. They chose the renowned Puerto Rican sculptress and photographer Maria Elena Perales to create it.
It is the first statue that honors the female legacy in Puerto Rico and one of the firsts in the Caribbean islands.
It stands in Ponce’s Historic District facing Dora Colón Clavell Park, which honors the mother of the former governor of Puerto Rico and Ponce native Rafael Hernández Colón.

A bronze bust of the famous award-winning Puerto Rican musician, singer, and composer Ednita Nazario, stands on the avenue her hometown renamed in her honor. The town chose to commemorate Nazario’s legacy in her life by dedicating this landmark and avenue that leads to the heart of the city. It was created by Omar Ortiz and dedicated on September 29th, 2008. The plaque on the marble pedestal reflects Nazario’s achievements, successful musical career, and connection to her hometown.
Edna María Nazario Figueroa was burn in 1955 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. From a young age, she knew she would be a singer.
At 6, she recorded her first song, and at 11, she made her radio debut. In her teens, she played in the band The Kids from Ponce, enjoying local success. At 17, she started hosting her TV variety show: El Show de Ednita. She released her first album at 18, called Al Fin Ednita, followed by 22 studio albums and five live albums over a still ongoing career spanning more than six decades.
Throughout her career, she has been performing worldwide, received several Latin Grammy nominations, and won the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
Ednita Nazario Monument is the second monument dedicated to a woman in Ponce and among the few in Puerto Rico. The first monument was Monumento a la Mujer, dedicated in 2002, honoring the contribution of Puerto Rican women to the country. Read more...
