At the heart of UC San Diego, in Marshall College on Ridge Walk, there is a monument commemorating Sojourner Truth – an abolitionist, equal and women’s rights activist who escaped from slavery.
Created by San Diego artist and UCSD alumna, Manuelita Brown, and dedicated on January 22nd, 2015, the life-size bronze sculpture depicts Truth in motion, holding a bible in one hand and, a bag in the other.
The plaque next to the statue inscribed with a famous quote by Truth:
“I feel safe in the midst of my enemies, for the truth is powerful and will prevail.”
Truth’s famous speech “Ain’t I a Woman” was read during the dedication ceremony.
