This memorial honors the life and legacy of Diana, Princess of Wales. Kathryn Gustafson and Neil Porter designed the fountain so it would express Diana’s spirit and personality.
Queen Elizabeth II herself dedicated it on July 6th, 2004, with the presence of her siblings, her sons Prince William and Prince Harry, her ex-husband Prince Charles, and her ex-father-in-law Prince Philip.
Located in the southwest corner of Hyde Park, the 50m by 80m circular fountain was created from 545 pieces of Cornish granite. The water enters the fountain’s highest point and flows in two streams; one descends smoothly downhill, and the other consists of curves, steps, and swirls that make the water run in various shapes and rhythms. The two streams symbolize the two sides of Diana’s life and personality, both calm turmoil.
The structure encourages public interaction, to enter the water and walk around it. It symbolizes Diana’s accessible approach, for which she became known as the “People’s Princess.”
Diana Frances Spencer (1961-1997) was born into an aristocratic family in Park House near Sandringham. In 1977, at 16, and while working as a kindergarten assistant, she first met 29 years old Charles, Prince of Wales. On July 29th, 1981, the couple got married. After entering the royal family, the now Princess took on a wide range of duties and became a patron of more than 100 charities. She used her fame and the excessive attention from the press to promote and raise awareness on causes close to her heart, including homelessness, cancer, and AIDS. After 11 years of a complex marriage and having two children, Diana and Prince Charles separated. Even though she lost the title of “Her Royal Highness,” she continued to serve the public by volunteering in the International Red Cross and shedding light on problematic issues, such as the dangers of leftover landmines in Angola. She died in a car accident while attempting to escape a trail of paparazzi that followed her in Paris. She was 36 years old.
The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain is a stop on The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk. The seven-mile self-guiding tour follows Diana’s legacy through 90 ground plaques in significant locations in her life, including Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, St. James’s Palace, and Spencer House.
