This National Historic Register house is a museum commemorating Carrie Lane Chapman Catt, who lived here for most of her childhood. Catt was one of the most influential leaders of the suffrage movement, she served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and founded the League of Women Voters as well as the International Alliance of Women. Thanks to her persistence and devotion, the 19th amendment was eventually ratified in August 1920.
The Victorian era house, built in 1886, was founded as a museum by The National 19th Amendment Society with a mission to commemorate Catt’s contribution to society. The Interpretive Center will give you a closer look at her life, work, and legacy. Stroll in the two-acre prairie and enjoy apple picking at the heritage apple orchard, while the children can dress up in pioneer clothes. The Iowa Suffrage Memorial, located at Iowa State Capitol, is commemorating the struggles of the pioneer suffragists and their efforts to ensure the legislation of the 19th Amendment in the state, which eventually took place on July 2nd, 1919.
The memorial, created by the Iowa sculptress Nellie Walker, was dedicated on May 10th, 1936, more than 10 years after it was commissioned.
The bronze bas-relief depicts a parade of Goddesses like figures, holding objects that symbolize progress and enlightenment. The women in the procession represent the achievements of the suffrage movements as well as the long chain of women who worked for the enfranchisement of women throughout the years. Read more...
