The Pyle House Museum was the childhood home of Gladys Pyle – the first Republican woman to be elected to the South Dakota Legislature, the first woman to hold constitutional office as South Dakota’s Secretary of State, the first Republican woman elected to the US Senate, and the first woman to win election to the Senate in her own right. The one-and-a-half-story house was built in 1894 in a late Queen Anne-style. It still has the original oak woodwork and stained-glass windows from the late 19th century. During your visit, you will learn about the Pyle family and its pioneering women, Gladys and her mother Mamie, who served as chairperson of the women’s suffrage movement, and the first woman to be nominated as a presidential elector of SD. View the authentic furnishing and objects, such as pioneer photos, model trains, Depression-era memorabilia, and Native-American artifacts. Read more...
