Since its development between the 16th and 17th centuries, Kathakali, a classical Indian dance, has been a male-only art form. It was a men-only show, and women were not allowed to participate.
In 1975, the first Kathakali women’s group was formed. No one believed the group would succeed, but they have been performing all over the country ever since and even won the President of India’s medal of honor in 2017.
The tour will introduce you to one of the artists from India’s first All Women’s Kathakali group. In this intimate gathering at her home, she will reveal all about Kathakali’s history, elements, and traditions, as well as how a group of women broke one of India’s strongest taboos. Part of the lecture will include a dance demonstration without make-up or costume. Read more...
