Thao Suranari (Ya Mo) Monument

In the city center of Nakhon Ratchasima stands a monument honoring the local and national heroine Thao Suranari, also known as Lady Mo.

The monument is a significant memorial and gathering place for the people in Nakhon Ratchasima, who come regularly to pay their respects.

Nearly 200 years ago, Thao Suranari (1771-1852) played a critical role in defending the Thai city of Korat (Nakhon Ratchasima) against invading Lao forces. As the wife of the city’s assistant governor during the reign of Rama III, she helped lead a prisoner revolt after the Lao rebels had conquered the city in 1826. Her leadership and cunning tactic led the city’s Thai defenders to victory, saving Korat.

Phra Thewaphinimmit designed the statue, and Silpa Bhirasri sculpted it.
Unveiled on January 15, 1934, the monument depicts Lady Mo dressed in regalia and looking west towards Bangkok; her right hand is holding a sword pointed downwards, and her left hand is on her waist. Her ashes lay the memorial to honor her virtues and bravery.

It stands in the middle of a large square, facing one of the old city gates, and is one of the most prominent landmarks of Korat city. Shops, food outlets, etc, can be found around it.

In 1967, the base was rebuilt through efforts of the Nakhon Ratchasima provincial government, Governor Sawadiwong Patithat, and local people. Since then, the annual Lady Mo Victory Day has been celebrated from March 23 to April 3. It is one of the largest annual events in Nakhon Ratchasima, drawing many visitors and tourists.

One of a few women’s memorials in Thailand, it is believed to be the first statue dedicated to a woman.
