A larger-than-life statue of Harriet Tubman by the artist Wesley Wofford is traveling the country since January 2020. The artist created a sculpture for a private building in Dallas, Texas, and a copy for everyone to enjoy. The monument will travel the country till 2022, visiting in a different location every few months.
Harriet Tubman, aka the black Moses, lived as a slave on the eastern shore of Maryland until her mid-twenty, when she escaped and set herself free. She became a conductor on the Underground Railroad (a secret network of routes and safe houses to escape slavery) and led to freedom hundreds of people, never losing a passenger. In between her rescue missions, she worked to earn money to support the enslaved people in their first steps in the free world.
This statue presents a frame to Tubman’s Journey to Freedom. It depicts her as a young woman holding the hand of a slave girl, leading her to her freedom on the Underground Railroad, leaving the chuckles of slavery behind. Their feet stand on one rock, which symbols the slave states, Maryland and Delaware, and Tubman’s left foot steps up, climbing over a cliff, symbolizing the danger of the journey on their way to Pennsylvania. They are walking against the wind, and Tubman’s dress is enveloping the girl, protecting her, a symbol to “all of the legal protections afforded to every United States citizen – a symbol of the future equality to come.”
