Female Samurai Takeko Nakano. Jeanne d'Arc in Japan.

In the final years of the Edo period, a civil war broke out between the ruling Tokugawa Shogunate and the Imperial Court, known as the Boshin war. As a Shogunate loyalist, Takeko would eventually command a unit of onna-musha known as the Joshitai, or 'Girls' army'. With naginata in hand, she would fight valiantly in this conflict, and die honourably at the age of 22.

This video is a beautiful and sad story of a female samurai in Aizu.
